Biostatistics #2-3 (Rank & Percentile, 등수 & 백분위)

Raw data by themselves are not very informative. Knowing the rank of an individual measurement with respect to the entire sample is more informative. 

 

The rank (등수) or percentile rank (백분위 등수) is the percentage of individuals with scores at or below the particular value.

 

When a particular score is identified by its rank, we call it a percentile. 

 

• Percentile: What score has this % or scores below it (refers to a score)?
• Percent Rank: What is the percentage of scores below this one (refers to a percentage)?

Percentile (백분위)

- 한 주어진 집단의 점수 분포 상에서 한 개인의 위치를 나타내는 유도점수의 하나

- 한 집단의 점수 분포 상에서 어떤 일정한 점수에 대한 백분위란? 그 점수 미만에 놓여있는 사례의 전체 사례에 대한 백분율을 말한다.

- 예를 들어, 한 적성검사에서 A라는 사람이 170점을 받았는데, 이 점수 밑에 전체 사례의 75%가 놓여있다면, 

==> A의 백분위 점수, 즉 백분위는 75가 된다. 

 

Percent Rank

: provides a way of giving information about one individual score in relation to all the other scores in a distribution.

- one member of a family of values called quantiles, which divide distributions into an equal number of parts.

: observation의 수치보다 score가 낮은 observation의 비율을 의미한다.

예를 들어 percentile 70.00의 의미는 전체 집단을 100%로 볼 때, observation의 score보다 낮은 점수의 observation의 비율이 70%임을 의미한다.

그러나 전체 응시집단의 score에 의해 percentile rank는 항상 변동할 수 있는 사항입니다.

score가 향상되었다고 하더라도 항상 percentile rank도 비례하여 향상되는 것은 아니다.
